The basics

  • Each player bets and gets two cards; the dealer gets one face up and one face down.
  • Hit to get closer to 21 without going over, stand, double or split a pair.
  • Beat the dealer to win; a blackjack (ace and a 10-value card) pays 3 to 2.

Game modes

  • 1 player (you against the dealer)
  • 2 to 5 players (each one against the dealer)

How to play

Goal

Each player plays against the dealer: closest to 21 without going over wins. Cards 2 to 10 count their number; J, Q and K count 10; the ace counts 11 or 1, whichever helps.

Each round

  • Everyone bets between 10 and 500 play-money chips.
  • Each player gets two cards face up; the dealer one face up and one face down.
  • In turn, each player can hit as many times as they like (over 21 loses), stand, double with the first two cards (double the bet and get exactly one more card) or split two cards of the same value into two hands with an equal bet (once per round). Split aces get one card each.

The dealer

The dealer plays last with fixed rules: hits until 16 and stands on 17 or more. If showing an ace or a 10-value card, the dealer checks the hidden card: with blackjack, the round ends at once.

Payouts

Beating the dealer pays 1 to 1; a blackjack (ace and a 10-value card as the first two cards) pays 3 to 2. A tie returns your bet. The game lasts 12 rounds and whoever ends with the most chips wins.

House rules here

One 52-card deck shuffled every round. No insurance or surrender. Doubling after a split is allowed. Players with fewer than 10 chips watch the rest of the game. Online you have 30 seconds to bet (otherwise the minimum is bet) and to act (otherwise you stand).

Strategy tips

  • Hard 17 or more: always stand. Hard 13 to 16: stand against a dealer 2 to 6, hit against 7 to ace.
  • Hard 11: double unless the dealer shows an ace. Hard 10: double against 2 to 9.
  • Always split aces and eights; never split tens or fives.
  • The deck is reshuffled every round, so card counting does not help.
